Mold can grow very rapidly and spread to areas that are inaccessible, leaving the home owner with a false sense of security. Basements and attics are the most common areas that we come across, but mold can be present anywhere, including the ducts to your HVAC unit.
People with a higher sensitivity to mold and allergens often have persistant symptons that won't seem to go away. For example, a chronic cough, constant headaches, watering or burning eyes, sneezing, or runny nose are common symptons of mold sensitivity. Often times mold is the last thing on a person's mind when searching for an answer to why the symptons started and why they won't go away. A healthy home is a home with no mold or radon, and that helps maintain the healthy lifestyle we work so hard to maintain.
There are a few different ways to prevent mold in your home, and all homeowners should consider taking preventative actions to ensure the growth and spreading of spores before the problem gets out of hand. Proper dehumidification is very important. Choosing the proper sized dehumidifier is even more important! Choosing one that is too small for the square footage of the area is almost as bad as not controlling the humidity at all. We, at Next Step, recommend the whole house dehumidifier, and it can be connected to your air handler through a duct system to maintain proper moisture levels through out your home. Another step to take is to get rid of clutter! If you use your basement or attic for storage, those porous items (such as boxes, linens, books, wood, etc.) cluttered together can block air flow, reduce ventilation and absorb moisture. What a perfect recipe to grow mold! If you need to store things in the basement or attic, try to put your belongings in plastic totes, if possible. Making sure your gutters and downspouts are clean and draining away from the home. Water draining back towards the house only leads to trouble.
